Climate in the Boreal Region

Climate in the Boreal Region

...

Skandinavian peninsula has three different climates:

  • a tempered humid climate with warm summers and snowy winters by the coast in the South (Dfb climate in Köppen classification)
  • a cold and humid climate with steady precipitations and cool summer in the main part of the peninsula and along the coast (Dfc climate in Köppen classification) and
  • at the top in the North, we have polar Tundra climate (ET climate in Köppen classification).

The Norrbotten region has a distinctive inland microclimate, very affected by Eastern winds.

During the winter, some of the coldest temperatures can be met here, locally down to -40º Celsius.

In contrast, the summer temperatures can sometimes be one of the highest in Europe, which is associated with the Russian steppe warmth that streams into the landscape.

Norrbotten owns the warmth record over the entire Norrland (which is more than half of the country), with a whole +37 Celsius. This record was set the 17th of July in 1945, in the minor community of Harads.
